Step Sparring
One Step Sparring (Ilbo Matsoki)
In one step sparring, both partners are in ready stance. The attacker shouts, then steps forward with the left leg into walking stance
executing a mid section punch with the left hand. The defender takes the appropriate blocks and counters.
Both partners then come back to ready stance. The attacker steps forward with the right leg into walking stance, executing a mid section
punch with the right hand. The defender must counter with exactly the same techniques but reversed.
Both partners come to ready stance, and the opposite partner attacks.
Why do we do 1-step sparring?
1-step sparring is the most realistic type of controlled sparring, other than advance self defence. This is because the defender needs to
be ready, and have fast reflexes and decision making in order to stop the attack, and perform a counter. 1-step is good way to focus and
practice your self defence techniques, which will improve further improve you skills in many ways as your Tae Kwon-Do training progresses.
Free Sparring
Expect to have to do free sparring on your grading. At this level you should be showing carefully controlled techniques, demonstrating the ability
to spot openings or weaknesses in your opponents guard, and exploit these through your attack techniques. In addition you should be guarding, countering
and blocking and attacks with your defence and dummy techniques.
Remember that on your grading, you shold be showing off both yours and your opponents skills, you would loose marks for being overly aggressive against
an opponent who might not be as strong as you in a free-sparring arena

Belt Meanings
RED
Signifies danger, cautioning the student to exercise control, and warning the opponent to stay away.

Interpretation
Toi Gye is the pen name of the noted scholar Yi Hwang (16th century A.D.), an authority on neo-confucianism. The 37 movements of this pattern refer to his birthplace on a 37 degree latitude and the diagram represents the scholar.
